KUCHING (Jan 6): Sarawak Energy Berhad has categorically refuted allegations that the company is giving out Christmas and New Year cash donations to bribe the indigenous communities in Baram to support the development of the controversial Baram hydroelectric project.

Saying that such allegations were made with malice intention with political agenda or to further the individual’s or the related NGO’s cause, SEB said the cash donations were in response to the requests made by the communities during an earlier meeting.

“Our engagements with the people have always been professional and ethical and it is frustrating to note that this good intention has been misconceived by a small group of people orchestrated by the anti-dam NGOs who have been instigating the people with these lies in order to propel their own agenda,” SEB said in a statement today.

This statement by Sarawak Energy certainly opens up some exciting possibilities for local people all around Sarawak.

We suggest that every kampung put in their requests now for beer and party money to assist their celebrations at Gawai.

They should insist that the money be given in hard cash and be brought personally to their Church Leaders and Tuai Rumah in their villages and in good time.

On what specific grounds was the rebate to Baram locals decided upon?
