The overt threats by UMNO/PAS to “take matters into their own hands” in connection with the inquest into the death of fireman Adlib shows that, once again, neither of these parties respect the rule of law and are quite prepared to ignore it when it appears to clash with their political notions.
And this from a political alliance asking for the support of voters on an overtly religious and communal basis. In most societies that would be enough to ensure political oblivion. But, regrettably, in Malaysia such faith based undemocratic ideas still have some traction.
Some. But not enough to secure election except in areas where religion still takes priority over democracy. Of course the heart of the problem lies in the existence and actions of a group of politicians who do not hesitate to use religion as a vote winner when, as all true religious leaders will admit, it is a matter for individual belief and not a political factor. To be entrusted with political power a political party or alliance needs to show both that it can act responsibly and in the public interest.
In the case of UMNO/PAS it has only demonstrated that it will use any means, religious and financial, to regain office. Its leaders will all have long grey beards and/or grave markers before anything of that sort happens.
